Lower town, the modern center
Starting at the train station we walk along the main alley laid out in the middle of the 19th century, which marks the transition into modern age, we arrive at Porta Nuova from where we enjoy a view towards the superb skyline of the Upper Town.
Here is the heart of the Lower Town crossed by the Sentierone, the favourite promenade of the Bergamask people, the Torre dei Caduti, the splendid monument created by the sculptor Giacomo Manzù in honour of Italy’s partisans and given by him to his native town, and the ancient cloister of S. Marta. The churches of the Lower Town with the altar pieces painted by Lorenzo Lotto during his stay in Bergamo.
